Title IX, University Policies and Title IX Coordinator

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on the sex (gender) of employees and students of educational institutions that receive federal financial assistance.  Title IX’s prohibition of sex discrimination includes prohibition of sexual harassment and sexual violence. Sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature and can include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, nonverbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature, including rape and sexual assault.

The University of Connecticut does not tolerate sex discrimination, sexual harassment or sexual violence of any kind. This prohibition is further explained in the University's Title IX Notice. To ensure compliance with Title IX and other federal and state civil rights laws, the University has designated Elizabeth Conklin as the University's Title IX Coordinator. Elizabeth is charged with monitoring compliance with Title IX and ensuring that reports of sex discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual violence are investigated and addressed by the University. Any student, faculty, or staff member with questions or concerns about the applicable University policies or who believes that he or she has been the victim of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, or sexual violence is encouraged to contact the University's Title IX Coordinator. Individuals with questions or concerns about violations of the Student Code specifically should contact the Office of Community Standards and also may want to review the Office of Community Standards' Sexual Assault Page.

Filing a Complaint of Sex Discrimination or Sexual Harassment

Individuals who believe that they have been discriminated against on the basis of protected qualifications, including sex discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual violence may file a complaint with the University. Any concerns of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and/or sex discrimination, regardless of the identity of the accused, may be brought to the Title IX Coordinator. For complaints about employee contact, concerned individuals may contact the Office of Diversity and Equity and/or fill out the Discrimination and/or Discriminatory Harassment Complaint Form. Allegations of discrimination made against students, including sex discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual assault may be directed to the Office of Community Standards

Non-Retaliation Policy

The University encourages individuals to bring forward information and/or complaints about sexual harassment and sexual assault. Retaliation against any individual who, in good faith, reports or participates in the investigation of alleged violations is strictly forbidden and will be enforced by the appropriate members of the University's administration.

Filing an External Complaint

Employees, students, and visitors to the campus can direct their concerns about sex discrimination to federal and state offices in addition to the University offices.  The United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”) enforces Title IX.  Generally this covers students, employees, and visitors to the campus involved in University-sponsored educational programs or activities.

Note: Federal law requires that a formal written complaint be filed with the EEOC within 300 days of the date when the alleged discriminatory act occurred.
