The Office of Diversity and Equity (ODE) has several important mandates. The overall goal of the office is to support “the University of Connecticut’s (University) commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, social equality, and affirmative action by providing advice and services.” The office is responsible for monitoring the University’s employment systems and its compliance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ODE also prepares the University’s Affirmative Action plan, and advises the University’s top administrators on equity and civil rights issues. The office is the neutral investigative unit within the University charged by statute with investigating internal discrimination complaints. ODE is also committed to promoting a positive campus environment through its diversity training programs and its projects for retaining women and minorities.
ODE is part of the Office of Multicultural & International Affairs, which is composed of several units that differ with respect to mission, programs of instruction, services provided, and the nature of their contributions to the core mission of the University. In that regard, ODE:

Supports the University's commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, social equity, and affirmative action by providing advice and services.

Advises the President, executive and senior administration on institutional civil rights and social equity policies, issues and problems.

Develops and implements programs and activities to promote a positive campus environment.

Manages special projects for the retention of minorities and women and diversity training programs that require central oversight.

Monitors the University's compliance with and develops activities to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Investigates internal complaints of discrimination and discriminatory harassment.
- Prepares the University's Affirmative Action Plan for Employment (state and federal versions).

Monitors employment systems, including search policies and procedures.

Assists the University administration on matters relating to institutional compliance.
- Engages in outreach activities to campus units and external groups in the state, region, and nation.
