The President's Advisory Committee on
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The President's Advisory Committee on ADA assists the senior administration in actively addressing and resolving problems related to employees, students and campus visitors with disabilities. It monitors progress on the Transition Plan, a document that prioritizes the accessibility needs of the University's buildings and facilities, and re-evaluates specific areas as needed. The Committee also coordinates various self-evaluations required by the ADA and other state and federal laws affecting the University, and recommends solutions for overcoming problems uncovered by these self-evaluations.

The Committee is composed of thirty-one administrators, service providers, faculty, and students who represent, or have a vested interest in, the disability community at the University. President Austin appointed members during Fall 1996, and named the University's ADA Coordinator as the Committee's chairperson. The Committee convenes once or twice a semester, but may meet more frequently as needed.

In Spring 1997, the Committee formed two subcommittees addressing facilities and program access. The Facilities Subcommittee keeps access issues in the forefront with UCONN 2000 construction and the Master Plan, while the Program Access Subcommittee addresses accessibility issues surrounding technology, distance learning, programs, and activities. A subcommittee relating to communications and adaptive technology presently is being formed (Spring 1998).
